The Largess Charity Ball was phenomenal. Organized by the Revolve young adult ministry of Jesus House Baltimore, this event was part of an ongoing attempt to make an impact on lives all over the world through essential forms of intervention such as providing clean water. I would like to thank the leadership and organizers of Largess for giving me and so many others the opportunity to contribute.
This piece was written for the event. Keep on giving; you know you want to.

THE AUCTION
Your heart beats fast; stronger by the minute;
Your strength, your bowels, your very soul is in it.
You fight the urge to shout passionately aloud,
For joy and gladness you finally have found.
No one can blame you—they feel the same way;
In fact you could start a dance party today!
But hold your horses…get ready to win…
The gavel smacks down—LET THE AUCTION BEGIN!
You start the bid asking “Who dare compete?”
But crazy enough the whole hall shuns defeat!
The bid rises up, higher and higher
Until you are last while all others “don tire.”
You raise your bid card to win more and more
For really that’s all that you came in here for.
In dinner and dancing you take much delight,
But your most satisfaction is in giving tonight.
So the lesson you’ve learned is beyond compare,
Your love for giving compels you to share.
Your heart rejoices for this is true bliss
‘Cause a couple of $100s you won’t really miss.
And since you believe that God’s Word is true,
That all of His many promises are really meant for you,
Then give to your heart’s content today,
We know you wouldn’t have it any other way.

My Confession to the System
I’m completely ashamed of myself and I’ve decided to come clean,
‘Cause I’ve taken a vow of integrity and I’m clearing my name.
So here goes.
I’m an impostor; an actor of deceit…
I’ve been taking advantage of you,
Presenting myself under the guise of inadequacy,
Blatantly deceiving you; feigning poverty.
I know. It’s despicable.
I can’t believe I’ve stooped this low myself.
So I’ve decided to stop pretending.
See, I have a confession to make.
It is my duty to inform you that…
(I can do this…)
That—
I’m filthy rich!
I know, I know, it’s really bad but that’s not all:
Me and my posé have an inheritance of Prime Real Estate.
I mean this Land never looses value.
We’re set for eternity!
You gotta see the humor in this!
Not only have I secured immeasurable fortune,
But I have stashed tremendous potential for many, many years
And it has even generated interest!
The crazy thing is I didn’t even realize it!
I mean, I kind of had an inkling
But I kept it hidden, holding back in fear.
I swore myself to secrecy, choosing not to reveal.
But it’s been buried there all this while.
Amassing in power and size
And I kept and horded it for myself.
Granted this vow to secrecy has exposed me to undesirable circumstances
I’ve suffered a lot under this pretense
Feigning the appearance of mediocrity
But I’m tired of living like this
And I chose to break out and claim my true identity
So I’m sorry for deceiving you!
I’m sorry for taking your hand outs,
Your resources reserved for the poor…
For succumbing to the lies they told me to tell
The compromises that lead to almost hell
Tweaking my credentials just a little bit to gain your acceptance and approval
And for taking your pity,
Your sympathy,
Your shame;
Just to bear your name.
From now on I will walk in true integrity
Taking my place of dignity and distinction
And embracing destiny.
So long system!
I’m off to conquer my world.
