Why Maternal and Child Health?

"Passion Creation" by tia. Original image.

Someone recently asked me 'Why Maternal and Child Health (MCH)? Why reach out to mainly Mothers and Babies?' I knew right away where the question stemmed from: The world is comprised of more than just Mommies and Babies...But I've taken some time to think about the question and gradually the question began to answer itself.

We've seen it from the dawn of creation: Adam and Eve had 2 sons, one tragically killed by the other. To comfort them, God gave them another child Seth, a child for their healing.

And think about Abraham and Sarah and how desperately they wanted a child. It was a heart breaking reality for them; they even tried to force it to happen by having a child outside of their marriage bond. But God still had a promise for them, one that they held close to their hearts, that they too would have a son, a Son of Promise that would yield a heritage more vast than the stars.

And Hannah, that faithful woman who cried at the feet of God yearly. She would bear her soul, beg and plead for one thing: to have a son. To show God that she was serious, she promised that she would give the baby back to GOD. And true to God's Faithfulness and to her word, she was given a son who she nursed, weaned and returned to God's service. And wasn't it just like God to bless her with more children in turn!

Remember David and Bathsheba and the son they lost because of Davids wrong doings, but who were ultimately given Solomon the wisest man to live. And the wealthy woman who was given a son out of the prophet's promise; the one who got sick and died, but God still restored. And the joy of Naomi when Ruth married Boaz and bore Obed to love and cherish.

These are all just a few stories we remember from Scripture, but we know it all remains true today. I recall the impatient anticipation I felt as a newly wed and how anxious I was about getting pregnant! The ready anticipation I found was part of the miracle. And as I journey through a fulfilling experience as a servant and educator to women, I realize that some of the deepest pain a human can experience is related to children, from loved ones who have experienced losses, to the reality of hundreds of women in my home country Nigeria who continue to suffer and mourn the uncertain whereabouts of their daughters.

Speaking of the plight of women on a variety of levels
Still yet unrestricted joy comes from every new arrival, as was the case for my family when we gathered to name my brand new nephew earlier this week. Some will pay all that they have to conceive through the help of science and medicine; others remain in strict bed rest, some for 2-3 months, just to have a healthy baby; still others sacrifice their entire selves to provide for, nurture, teach and raise them well.

Children are at the center of desire. Not everyone cares for them, but those who do often desire them passionately. This is why MCH. Caring for women means caring for future generations, equipping her to lay a solid foundation, a place of nurture and care, a powerful portrayal of love. Teaching and protecting women empowers and equips them to make an impact on young lives, including the women who love and embrace many children beyond biological restrictions.

Today we are in the business of promoting the health, safety and well-being of women, their children and the communities that support them. Essentially, this could include every human being alive.
